Visitor guidelines

Welcome to the Municipality of Riomaggiore! You are in an extraordinary yet incredibly fragile area, where residents’ everyday life and nature coexist in a delicate balance.

These villages are living places, and just a few simple everyday gestures can help us protect them while you enjoy your visit.

⏱️ 1. Respect the pace and the spaces

  • Take your time: The Cinque Terre are not meant to be experienced in a rush. Always yield to those who live and work here.
  • Keep pathways clear: do not stop for photos or videos on narrow trails, stairways, and passages during peak times
  • Privacy: Do not photograph the inside of homes or local people without their consent.

🥾 2. Safety and landscape protection

  • Stay on the trails: Never enter areas that are closed, private or marked as unsafe.
  • Do not climb: Climbing on dry-stone walls, parapets or vineyard structures to take photographs is prohibited. You could injure yourself and cause damage or small landslides.
  • Respect nature: Do not pick flowers, plants or stones.

🎒 3. Decorum and behaviour in the villages

  • Dress appropriately: Remember that the villages are residential areas, not beaches. Avoid walking around in swimwear or bare-chested away from bathing areas.
  • No picnicking or lingering: Do not use house steps, squares or churchyards for picnics or prolonged stops.
  • Quiet and relaxation: Avoid shouting and loud music, especially in the evening and at night, out of respect for residents’ rest.

🚮 4. Waste and graffiti: leave no trace

  • Take rubbish with you: hold onto your waste until you find a recycling bin.
  • Use reusable bottles: Refill at public fountains and cut down on plastic.
  • Leave no marks: Littering, cigarette butts, and graffiti on walls or rocks are strictly prohibited.

🌊 5. Sea and Marine Protected Area

  • Swim safely: avoid swimming in restricted zones or where waves and currents make access hazardous.
  • Respect the ecosystem: Do not leave litter on the rocks, and avoid disturbing marine wildlife or local fishers.

🛒 6. Support the community

  • Buy local: For your shopping and meals, choose local shops, restaurants, artisans and farmers. Your purchase directly supports the care and upkeep of this fragile landscape.
