Seasonal tips

Each season changes the way you experience Riomaggiore, Manarola, Groppo, and Volastra. The routes may remain the same, but timing, activities, and pace should be adjusted according to daylight, temperatures, the sea, crowd levels, and trail conditions.

Spring

The ideal season for walking, exploring the villages, and visiting the nearby hamlets. Temperatures are milder, the trails are pleasant, and the agricultural landscape takes center stage once again. It’s the perfect time for outdoor excursions, walks through vineyards, visits to Volastra and Groppo, tastings, and sunsets, all without the crowds of the peak summer months.

  • Ideal for: outdoor activities, food & wine, villages, scenic hikes.
  • Good to know: always check trail conditions after rain or weather alerts.

Summer

Summer is here, bringing the sea, boating, and long, sunny days. From boat tours and ferry excursions to rocky beaches, aperitifs, and sunsets, water activities become the main event. The trails are still open but require caution—aim for an early morning or late afternoon hike to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

  • Ideal for: beach and water activities, sunsets, dinners in the villages, evening experiences.
  • Good to know: book tours, restaurants, and activities in advance; bring water and sunscreen.

Fall

The perfect season for those seeking a slower pace. With temperatures once again ideal for hiking, the villages become less crowded, and the terraced landscapes take on warmer hues. It’s an excellent time for wine tastings, food tours, scenic hikes, and exploring the historic hamlets.

  • Ideal for: food & wine, outdoor activities, villages, and events
  • Good to know: weather can be unpredictable; always check for alerts, trail conditions, and sea conditions.
